Montalcino and the Brunello | Weekend in Italy
Discover the enchanting home of one of Italy's most famous and prized wines: the Brunello.
Everything seems like a dream in the Brunello kingdom - the castle and village of Montalcino atop the highest hill, the roads through the Sangiovese grosso vineyards, the taste from the huge barrels resting in the darkened cellars.
The Brunello - or "small dark one" in the local dialect - is the local name of the Sangiovese grosso grape grown in the enchanting hills of the Montalcino region. In 1980, the Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation.
Your tour begins with a visit to the Altesino estate, which rises in the hills to the east of Montalcino. The elegant 15th century Palazzo Altesi, formerly owned by the Tricerchi family of Tuscany is now owned by Signora Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who relies on the collaboration of Pietro Rivella and Paolo Caciorgna for the oenological and technical aspects of winery management.
Over the past 30 years, the estate has set trends in the production of Brunello di Montalcino. - You will be introduced to the estate and have the opportunity to taste some of the award-winning Altesino wines.
After this unique experience, you will be driven to the beautiful medieval town of Montalcino, capital of the Brunello region. The family-style restaurant Grappolo Blu awaits you for a delicious Tuscan lunch in the historical center.
Your afternoon continues with a visit to the ancient Abbey of San Antimo, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Italy. Formerly a Benedictine Abbey, now inhabited by Canons Regular, the Carolingian edifice invites discovery and peaceful contemplation.
A French imprint is conferred on the Abbey of San Antimo by the basilical ground plan, an ambulatory with radial chapels, unique in Tuscany and among the few existing in Italy.
Your tour will culminate in a visit to the Tenuta Poggio Antico in Montalcino. The Gloder family's passion for the land and nature, hard manual work in the vineyards, extremely low yields, modern technology in the cellar, and abundant patience are reflected in the excellent Poggio Antico Brunello wines. A wine tasting on the estate will conclude your tour through the Brunello kingdom.
